 Sleep Series- New Year's Resolution

Restless Sleep: Causes and Treatments - Brynna Connor MD

Our goal is to provide healthy skin products that motivate individuals to take better care of their skin which leads to taking better care of every aspect of their life.  And when we started Profile Nourishment, we wanted to produce superior products that would be amazing things for the health and appearance of skin.  I feel like we accomplished that goal but that is just one piece of the healthy skin puzzle.  In this series we want to talk about the importance of sleep and its role in having healthy skin. Lack of sleep can significantly impact the health of your skin and in the spirit of helping you keep your new year's resolution of better sleep and healthy skin.

When you don't get enough rest, it takes a toll on your skin's appearance and overall well-being. Here's how insufficient sleep affects your skin:

  1. Skin Renewal and Repair: During the night, your skin's metabolic rate increases, leading to cellular turnover and new cell production. Lack of sleep disrupts this process, affecting the secretion of the growth hormone somatotropin. This hormone is responsible for repairing damaged cells and maintaining skin elasticity. Without adequate sleep, your skin's ability to repair itself diminishes, potentially leading to issues like acne breakouts and rashes.

  1. Inflammatory Cytokines: When you're sleep-deprived, your body produces more inflammatory cytokines. These compounds can exacerbate skin conditions and contribute to skin irritation and redness. So, those late nights can lead to visible signs of stress on your skin.

  1. Hypopigmentation and Delayed Healing: Melatonin, a hormone produced during sleep, acts as the skin's defense against environmental stressors like UV rays. Lack of sleep reduces melatonin levels, making your skin more vulnerable to oxidative damage. This can result in hypopigmentation (uneven skin tone) and delayed wound healing.

  1. Fine Lines, Wrinkles, and Dark Circles: Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles under the eyes. Collagen production decreases when you don't get enough rest, affecting skin elasticity and plumpness.
